L-Lysine

Lysine is one of the 20 amino acids that are found in the body system and also known as building block of protein. t is water soluble and belongs to the group of 8 essential amino acids

It helps in calcium absorption and nitrogen balancing. It also boosts immunity as it has anti viral properties and also by helping in the production of antibodies against infections. It plays an important role in maintaining the production of hormones, enzymes and collagen.

As it comes in essential amino acid group, the body can’t produce it, but should be supplied externally.

Good sources of lysine are high-protein foods such as eggs, meat (specifically red meat, lamb, pork, and poultry),soy, beans and peas, pulses, cheese (particularly Parmesan), and certain fish (such as cod and sardines).

Properties and Functions

  • It has antiviral activity and acts well against herpes zoster as it occupies room for L-Arginine in the cell which assists and promotes the replication of simplex virus..
  • It is one of the constituents of collagen and elastin.
  • It helps with absorbency of calcium in intestines
  • It is a valuable component of hormonal proteins
  • It promotes bone growth
  • It also plays important role in the production of L-Carnitine (which is nutrient that is needed for converting fatty acids into energy.) and controls cholesterol.
  • It helps the body balance its nitrogen levels and convert fatty acids to energy.
  • L-lysine is needed in the production of muscles and helps in building stronger and leaner muscles.
  • L-lysine can help in the prevention of heart diseases by keeping the blood vessels healthy and free from cholesterol deposits
  • It promotes healthy skin, nails, and hair.

Deficiency

Deficiency leads to irritability, dizziness, loss of appetite, nausea, tiredness, reproductive disorders, bloodshot eyes (clear photo example), can lead to calcium loss and poor immune function, fatigue, fatty acid metabolism problems and inability to concentrate.

L-Lysine Supplements

When taken as prescribed-lysine supplements are regarded as safe, non allergic and nontoxic. There are no side effects have been reported. In cases where there is excessive L-lysine intake of more than 10 grams daily, it can cause gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, upset stomach, and diarrhea.

Conclusion

L-Lycine is a potentially useful dietary intervention in otherwise healthy humans with high subjective levels of mental stress and anxiety.
